VOLUNTEER JOB IN ECUADOR - AMAZON
Yacuma Ecolodge Rainforest Volunteer Program
Amazon Jungle - Ecuador
Amazon Jungle - Ecuador
Green, mysterious, and unexplored - it was a conquistador’s dream for Gonzalo Pizzaro and Francisco de Orellana, who followed the rivers down from the high Andes in 1538, searching for El Dorado, the lost city of gold ….
The Yacuma Ecolodge Rainforest Volunteer Program is based upon the idea that the essence of volunteering is to give and receive. The Volunteer Program will enable you to make a significant difference in someone life by giving your valuable time and effort. At the same time you will improve yourself both personally and professionally. You will improve personally by living and working in another country and culture. You will improve professionally by learning another language and by developing valuable skills that you will find invaluable in your further career. Working as a volunteer will give you many new experiences and allow you to learn more about yourself. Your volunteer experiences will give you memories that you will never forget; experiences that will shape your life further on.
Why volunteer?
Volunteer work is a way for you to do incredible things in another country and another culture. You will get the opportunity to learn Spanish, get valuable skills and experience and demonstrate solidarity towards an Amazon community that need your help.
It’s a reciprocal process that benefits both you and your workplace. By such an interchange, you will take part in improving the world by making friendships across boarders and by emphasizing values such as tolerance and peace.
Volunteer Guide
The staff, who works at Yacuma Ecolodge, has worked as volunteers in Ecuador themselves. They have extensive experience in welcoming foreigners to Ecuador and speak fluent English and Spanish. Due to our experience we always offer the best for our volunteers.

What’s it like to volunteer?
The sensation you get when you volunteer is that you give and receive. Your work will make a significant difference while, at the same time, you will learn a lot from your colleagues and your work experience. Our ecolodge is an organization with a high level of experience and project to help an Amazon Community, but unfortunately with low economic resources. That’s why they need help from volunteers and they will repay you with a wealth of new knowledge and friendship. Depending on where you will work the experience can also be very difficult. Some volunteers may see a lot that they are not used to. However, we can promise you that you will also find a lot of smiling faces and happiness. It is important to remember that poorness it’s not the same as unhappiness!

Language.
The overwhelming majority of Ecuadorians speak only Spanish, but that it won’t be a problem because our staffs in the lodge speak English quite well.

About the Amazon Jungle
Welcome to the Amazon Rainforest, the world's largest remaining tropical rainforest. More life hums, buzzes, chatters and bubbles here than anywhere else on the planet. One Amazonian tree can host more ant species than all of the British Isles put together, one hectare of forest boasts about as many frog species as all of North America, and the great expanse of the jungle contains more than twenty percent of the earth's vascular plant species. Here you can find a monkey small enough to sit on your fingertip, an eight-pound toad, a spider that eats birds, and the world's largest snake: the 30-foot anaconda.
The Amazon and its tributaries begin on the eastern side of the Andes Mountain Range, and drain snow and rain from half a continent into the distant Atlantic Ocean. Today, despite deforestation pressures and other human influences, the Amazon River Basin still contains approximately 6.7 million km2 of rainforest, an area almost 2/3 the size of the United States (including Alaska!). The Amazon Basin is a vast natural tropical area, more than half of which is located within the borders of Brazil.
The Amazon Rain Forest has all the typical attributes of a tropical environment. The weather is hot, humid and rainy, with an average rainfall of over 200 cm (80 inches) per year. These rainforests contain a huge variety of diverse biomes, many of which contain unique species not found anywhere else on the globe. This vast region is home to about 2.5 million insect species, tens of thousands of plants, some 2,000 kinds of birds and mammals, and many different species of amphibians and reptiles. Among the most commonly know animals are such different species as jaguar, anaconda, howler monkey, macaws, toucans, tarantulas and river dolphins. One-in-ten of all plant and animal species in the world inhabit the Amazon Rainforest. One-in-five of all the birds in the world live in the rainforests of the Amazon. The diversity of plant species is the highest on Earth; some experts estimate that one square kilometer (1 km2 ) of rainforest may contain over 75,000 types of trees and 150,000 species of higher plants. One square kilometer of Amazon rainforest can contain an incredible bio-mass of more than 90,000 tons of living plants!
Moreover, forty percent of all of all the earth's fresh water flows through the Amazon basin; more water than in the basins of the next six biggest rivers combined! In the Amazon river there are islands as big as Switzerland, otters bigger than men, and at certain points along it you can be in the middle and see neither shore.

This rainforest is home to thousands of indigenous inhabitants, who make up nearly 200 distinct nations, including the Siona, Secoya, Cofan, Shuar, Zaparo, Huaorani, and Quichua. The indigenous tribes that live in Ecuador's rainforest are the ancient keepers and guardians of the world's biological heritage - having lived there for more than 10,000 years - they know its trees, its animals, and its rhythms better than anyone.

Vaccination
Before coming to Ecuador, check with your doctor to determine which vaccines you need. We recommend the following vaccines:
- Typhoid fever: Must be taken 2 weeks before arrival. Lasts three years
- Hepatitt A: Must be taken 1 month before arrival. Lasts 1-2 years. If you refill the vaccine after 1-11/2 years it lasts 20 years
- Yellow fever: Must be taken 7-10 days before arrival. Lasts 10 years Yellow Fever is a very rare cause of illness for travelers, but, if you plan on spending time in the rainforest or coastal lowlands, you should get immunized. Like Malaria, Yellow Fever is a disease transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. Likewise, you should follow the same precautions as with Malaria. Employ insect repellent, protective clothing, and mosquito netting to minimize the risk of bites from infected mosquitoes. (The Ministry of Information and Tourism)
- Tetanus: Must be taken 2 weeks before arrival. Lasts 10 years
- Malaria: If you are going to the jungle or the coast you also need antimalarial drugs On account of Ecuador's diverse geography, there is risk for Malaria in some parts of the country and not in others. Mosquitoes, the primary carriers of malaria, do not like heights. As a result, travelers run little risk of getting Malaria while in the mountains and mountain valleys of Ecuador's High Sierra Region. On the other hand, because mosquitoes thrive in the Ecuador's hot and humid Coastal region and the Amazon jungle lowlands, you must take the appropriate precautions while travelling in these regions. Travelers can eliminate much of the Malarial risk by taking prescription antimalarial drugs and protecting themselves against mosquito bites. You can protect yourself from mosquito bites by using insect repellent (the repellent must contain DEET), always wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and sleeping beneath mosquito nets. (The Ministry of Information and Tourism)
Why pay for volunteering?
For many it may seem strange to have to pay in order to work for free. However, it is necessary to charge a small amount in order to defray costs of the workplaces and the families where the volunteers live. We are aware of the fact that many volunteers do not have a lot of money and we therefore always work to offer you the minimum price.
The work of the Yacuma Rainforest Volunteer Program is non-profit and we therefore only charge for administrative costs.
